LETTER LXXIII. MR. VILLARS TO EVELINA. Berry Hill, Oct. 3rd. YOUR last communication, my dearest child, is indeed astonishing; that an acknowledged daughter and heiress of Sir John Belmont should be at Bristol, and still my Evelina bear the name of Anville, is to me inexplicable; yet the mystery of the letter to Lady Howard prepared me to expect something extraordinary upon Sir John Belmont's return to England. Whoever this young lady may be, it is certain she now takes a place to which you have a right indisputable. An after-marriage I never heard of; yet, supposing such a one to have happened, Miss Evelyn was certainly the first wife, and therefore her daughter must, at least, be entitled to the name of Belmont. Either there are circumstances in this affair at present utterly incomprehensible, or else some strange and most atrocious fraud has been practiced; which of these two is the case it now behoves us to enquire. My reluctance to this step gives way to my conviction of its propriety, since the reputation of your dear and much-injured mother must now either be fully cleared from blemish, or receive its final and indelible wound. The public appearance of a daughter of Sir John Belmont will revive the remembrance of Miss Evelyn's story in all who have heard it,-who the mother was, will be universally demanded,-and if any other Lady Belmont should be named, the birth of my Evelina will receive a stigma, against which, honour, truth, and innocence...

Summary
Mr. Villars writes what may be his final letter as Evelina's guardian, addressing the shocking news that another young woman has appeared claiming to be Sir John Belmont's daughter and heir. He recognizes this crisis for what it truly is: either there's some massive misunderstanding, or someone is perpetrating a cruel fraud that threatens to destroy Evelina's mother's reputation forever. The stakes couldn't be higher. If this other woman is acknowledged as the legitimate daughter, it would brand Evelina's deceased mother as a liar and cast Evelina herself as illegitimate. Mr. Villars refuses to let this happen. Despite his natural preference for avoiding confrontation, he knows they must act quickly before the lie becomes accepted truth. He's sending Evelina to London with proof of her identity, including a letter her mother wrote specifically for this moment, and Mrs. Clinton as a witness. But beyond the practical preparations, this letter reveals the depth of a father's love. Mr. Villars pours out his hopes and fears for Evelina's future, blessing her with wisdom about how to handle the wealth and status she's about to claim. He warns her against pride and ostentation, urging her to remain the humble, genuine person he raised. His final blessing reads like a prayer, asking that prosperity won't corrupt her character. This moment marks the end of Evelina's childhood protection and the beginning of her emergence into a world where she must fight for her rightful place. It's both heartbreaking and empowering—a father letting go while giving his daughter everything she needs to succeed.
That's what happens. To understand what the author is really doing—and to discuss this chapter with confidence—keep reading.
Terms to Know
Indisputable right
A legal claim so clear and backed by evidence that it cannot be challenged or denied. In this chapter, Mr. Villars refers to Evelina's birthright as Sir John Belmont's legitimate daughter.
Modern Usage:
We use this when talking about inheritance disputes, custody battles, or any situation where someone's legal claim is rock-solid.
After-marriage
A secret or second marriage that happens after a first one, which would complicate inheritance and legitimacy. Mr. Villars considers this as one possible explanation for the mysterious second daughter.
Modern Usage:
Today we see this in situations involving bigamy, secret marriages, or when someone discovers their parent had multiple relationships they didn't know about.
Atrocious fraud
A deliberately cruel and shocking deception designed to steal what rightfully belongs to someone else. Mr. Villars suspects someone is trying to cheat Evelina out of her inheritance and identity.
Modern Usage:
We see this in identity theft cases, inheritance scams, or when someone impersonates a family member to claim benefits or money.
Indelible wound
A permanent damage to someone's reputation that can never be erased or healed. Mr. Villars fears that if they don't act, Evelina's mother will be forever branded as a liar.
Modern Usage:
This is what happens when false accusations go viral on social media or when someone's reputation is destroyed by rumors that stick forever.
Public appearance
When someone steps into the spotlight and claims their place in society, which brings both recognition and scrutiny. The false daughter's emergence will force everyone to examine the truth.
Modern Usage:
Like when someone comes forward with a major claim about their family connections, or when a long-lost relative appears seeking inheritance.
Stigma
A mark of shame or disgrace that follows someone, affecting how others see and treat them. Mr. Villars fears Evelina will be branded as illegitimate if they don't prove the truth.
Modern Usage:
We see this with children born outside marriage, people with criminal records, or anyone society judges for circumstances beyond their control.

When Someone Claims Your Scholarship
Following Evelyn's story...
Evelyn's guidance counselor calls with shocking news: another girl has come forward claiming she's the rightful recipient of Evelyn's full-ride scholarship to the state university. This other student has documents suggesting Evelyn's application contained false information about her family's financial status. If the university believes this claim, Evelyn loses everything—her scholarship, her college acceptance, and her reputation. Her foster father, Mr. Villa, knows they can't let this stand. Despite hating confrontation, he gathers every document proving Evelyn's eligibility: tax forms, custody papers, school records. He contacts Mrs. Clinton from social services as a witness. But beyond the paperwork battle, he sits Evelyn down for what feels like a final conversation before she enters this fight. He reminds her that once she proves her case and starts college, she'll be moving in circles where people might look down on her background. Stay humble, he tells her. Don't let success change who you are. Remember where you came from, but don't let anyone make you ashamed of it either.
The Road
The road Mr. Villars walked in 1778, Evelyn walks today. The pattern is identical: when someone attacks your child's future with lies, love demands you fight back with truth, no matter how uncomfortable confrontation feels.

Build Your Evidence File
Think of a current situation where you might need to advocate for yourself or someone you care about. Create a simple evidence file like Mr. Villars did. List the facts you can document, the witnesses who could support you, and the specific outcome you're seeking. Don't worry about whether you'll actually use it - just practice thinking strategically about building a case.
Consider:
- •Focus on facts you can prove, not just feelings or opinions
- •Consider who has credibility and might support your position
- •Think about timing - when would be most effective to act?
