To prove to you more clearly, sisters, the truth of what I have been saying and to show that the more the soul advances, the closer does this good Jesus bear it company, it would be well for me to tell you how, when He so chooses, it cannot withdraw from His presence. This is clearly shown by the manners and ways in which His Majesty communicates Himself to us, manifesting His love by wonderful apparitions and visions which, if He is pleased to aid me, I will describe to you so that you may not be alarmed if any of these favours are granted you. Summary
Teresa describes one of the most mysterious spiritual experiences: the intellectual vision, where someone feels Christ's presence without seeing anything. She tells the story of a woman (herself) who suddenly became aware that Jesus was standing beside her, though she couldn't see him with her eyes or even her imagination. This presence lasted not minutes but months, sometimes over a year. The woman was terrified at first—how do you explain feeling someone's presence so strongly when there's nothing visible? The experience brought powerful effects: constant awareness of God's nearness, careful attention to her actions knowing he was watching, deep peace, and an overwhelming sense of unworthiness. Teresa emphasizes the practical signs that distinguish genuine spiritual experiences from delusion or demonic interference: they produce lasting humility rather than pride, increase desire to serve God rather than self-importance, and create sustained peace rather than anxiety. She strongly advises anyone having such experiences to consult qualified spiritual directors—ideally theologians who also have spiritual experience. The key insight is that authentic spiritual encounters make people more humble and service-oriented, not more special or superior. Teresa warns against both dismissing such experiences as mere imagination and becoming prideful about receiving them. The chapter reveals how the most profound spiritual experiences often come not through dramatic visions but through a quiet, persistent awareness of divine presence that transforms daily life.
That's what happens. To understand what the author is really doing—and to discuss this chapter with confidence—keep reading.
Terms to Know
Intellectual Vision
A spiritual experience where someone feels absolutely certain of God's presence without seeing anything with their eyes or imagination. Teresa describes it as knowing someone is standing next to you in a dark room - you can't see them, but you're completely sure they're there.
Modern Usage:
We experience this when we have strong intuitive knowledge about something without concrete proof - like sensing someone is lying or knowing a relationship is over before anything is said.
Spiritual Director
A trained religious counselor who helps people understand and navigate spiritual experiences. Teresa insists anyone having mystical experiences should consult these experts to avoid delusion or pride.
Modern Usage:
Similar to how we seek therapists, life coaches, or mentors when dealing with major life changes or confusing experiences.
Discernment of Spirits
The ability to tell whether a spiritual experience comes from God, human imagination, or evil influences. Teresa provides practical tests: genuine experiences produce humility, peace, and desire to serve others.
Modern Usage:
Like learning to distinguish between healthy relationships and toxic ones, or recognizing when our gut instincts are reliable versus when we're being paranoid.
Mystical Theology
The study of direct spiritual experiences and union with God, as opposed to regular theology which focuses on doctrine and beliefs. Teresa wants advisors who understand both theory and practice.
Modern Usage:
The difference between reading about parenting and actually raising kids - you need guides who've done both the studying and the living.
Divine Favor
Special spiritual gifts or experiences that God grants to some people. Teresa emphasizes these aren't rewards for being better than others, but unmerited gifts that should increase humility.
Modern Usage:
Like natural talents or lucky breaks - they're gifts that come with responsibility to use them well, not reasons to feel superior to others.
Contemplative Life
A lifestyle focused on prayer, meditation, and seeking direct experience of God rather than just studying about God. Teresa lived this way as a Carmelite nun.
Modern Usage:
Similar to people who prioritize mindfulness, meditation, or spiritual practices over material success or social status.

Modern Adaptation
When Your Gut Knows Before Your Head Does
Following Sarah's story...
Maya feels it the moment she walks into the hospital break room—something's shifted with her supervisor Janet, though she can't pinpoint what. No dramatic confrontation, no obvious signs, just this persistent awareness that Janet sees her differently now. For weeks, this invisible presence of approval follows Maya through her shifts. She finds herself double-checking her charting, being extra gentle with difficult patients, staying late without being asked. The feeling is so strong she sometimes turns around expecting to see Janet watching, but she's not there. Other CNAs notice the change—Maya seems more focused, more confident, carrying herself like someone who matters. When Maya finally asks Janet about it, Janet smiles: 'I've been considering you for charge nurse training. I guess you felt that before I said it.' The invisible authority of being truly seen and valued had been transforming Maya's work for months before she understood why.
The Road
The road Teresa's woman walked in 1577, Maya walks today. The pattern is identical: invisible presence creating visible transformation through sustained awareness of being valued.
The Map
This chapter provides a tool for recognizing authentic authority—the kind that influences through invisible presence rather than visible control. Maya can now distinguish between real leadership and empty displays of power.
Amplification
Before reading this, Maya might have dismissed her intuition about workplace dynamics as 'just feelings.' Now she can NAME invisible authority, PREDICT its effects on behavior, and NAVIGATE toward leaders who influence through genuine presence rather than fear.
You now have the context. Time to form your own thoughts.

Critical Thinking Exercise
Map Your Invisible Influences
Think of someone whose presence you feel even when they're not around - maybe a parent, mentor, or leader whose values guide your decisions. Write down three specific ways their influence shows up in your daily choices. Then identify one person who might feel your invisible influence and consider what kind of presence you're creating.
Consider:
- •Look for influence that makes you want to be better, not just obedient
- •Notice the difference between feeling supported versus feeling watched
- •Consider how your own consistent behavior creates invisible authority with others
Journaling Prompt
Write about a time when you felt someone's positive influence guiding you even though they weren't physically present. What made their authority feel supportive rather than controlling?
