About José Rizal
José Rizal (1861-1896) was a Filipino nationalist, writer, and polymath who became the national hero of the Philippines. He wrote Noli Me Tángere while studying in Europe, using fiction to expose the abuses of Spanish colonial rule. The novel was banned by Spanish authorities and contributed directly to the Philippine Revolution. Rizal was executed by firing squad at age 35, becoming a martyr whose death galvanized the independence movement.
